Power in Partnership: Centre 56 and Merseyrail Named Finalists at Prestigious Third Sector Awards – Transformational charity partnership has been recognised for outstanding impact in Corporate Partnership of the Year category.

Merseyrail, along with its charity of the year, Centre 56, has been shortlisted for the Corporate Partnership of the Year – Medium category at the Third Sector Awards 2025, one of the UK’s most prestigious celebrations of excellence in the voluntary and not-for-profit sector. The nomination recognises the success of a powerful partnership that began in January 2024, when Centre 56 was selected as one of Merseyrail’s chosen charities through its employee-led Charity of the Year programme.

At the heart of the partnership was the “Running the Railways” campaign, led by Centre 56 fundraiser by, Alex Rigby, who ran a staggering 109 miles across the Merseyrail network. His journey symbolised the path families take towards lives free from abuse, turning awareness into action. Together, Centre 56 and Merseyrail raised an impressive £56,000 during the campaign, directly supporting the charity’s vital work with children and families affected by domestic abuse.

Beyond the funds raised, Merseyrail’s platform as a major regional transport provider significantly amplified Centre 56’s message, reaching thousands of commuters daily, increasing public awareness, and opening doors to new supporters and opportunities. This partnership is a shining example of how corporate collaboration can create meaningful and lasting change in local communities. Over the course of the two-year partnership, more than £100,000 has been raised for Centre 56, an extraordinary achievement that continues to make a real difference.

Lesley Burrows, Executive Director at the Regenda Group, said: “This shortlisting is a proud moment for everyone involved. Merseyrail’s belief in Centre 56 and their willingness to use their platform to amplify our mission has been nothing short of transformational. Together, we’ve not only raised vital funds but also created a movement of awareness and solidarity that will have a lasting impact on the families we support.”

Neil Grabham, Managing Director of Merseyrail said: “Everyone at Merseyrail is thrilled that this partnership has been shortlisted for such a prestigious national award. Running the Railways was not only a powerful testament to Alex Rigby’s endurance and perseverance, but also a shining example of the incredible outcomes that can be achieved when partners collaborate with purpose. The substantial funds raised have already made a meaningful difference, transforming lives across our community, for those who live, work, and travel here. We’re proud to be at the heart of this community and deeply grateful for the opportunity to contribute.”

The winners of the Third Sector Awards will be announced at a ceremony later this year.
