My Planet Liverpool was delighted to meet up with Carl Oates, Partner at Riqueza Business Solutions, to discover more about the Riqueza Group and his life away from the office. The Riqueza Business Solutions team are located at Yorkshire House on Liverpool’s historic Water Street and Carl kindly invited MPL to call in and have a chat with him.
Thank you for meeting up with My Planet Liverpool, Carl. Firstly could you tell us what does Riqueza mean and how was the name decided upon?Carl: ‘Riqueza” is Spanish for “wealth”. I sold off what I could from a previous business venture after quite a challenging phase and started afresh. One of my oldest friends from school was (and still is) running a business out in Spain and I wanted to help him with that business, building and selling properties to wealthy individuals. We started Riqueza with wealthy clients in mind and maybe one day we hope that we might build some wealth too!
MPL: YOU ARE CALLED “RIQUEZA GROUP”. WHAT ARE THE MAIN BUSINESS OFFERINGS WITHIN THE GROUP STRUCTURE?
Carl:. At companies house, our main entity which owns our brands is “Riqueza Holdings Ltd”. Riqueza Group is how we go to market with a number of business entities we own, all of which are either aimed at business owners; wealthy individuals or in some cases, both.
Riqueza Business Solutions was set-up just over four years ago now and this business was created to help small to medium sized business owners, particularly those who were very skilled in their own profession but maybe a little light on understanding where finance and banking options are concerned.
The other reason for being where Riqueza Business Solutions is today is the growing number of business owners who think a bank is the only place they can go if they want a business loan or a type of business funding. The reality is far different! The modern world of alternative funding is vast and includes 2nd-tier funders; crowd funding; family offices; ultra wealthy individuals; commercial mortgage providers and many more.Design & Property by Riqueza is our interior design & construction management business. This business is run by Jon Waldron, and managers projects on behalf of wealthy residential clients and also commercial interior & fit out markets. This is a rapidly expanding business within our group structure and one that we are very excited about. There are a couple of great projects involving Liverpool based clients and please look out for coverage of the completed work in future editions of My Planet Liverpool.
MPL: TELL US A LITTLE MORE ABOUT WHAT RIQUEZA BUSINESS SOLUTIONS DOES?Carl: Riqueza Business Solutions has nearly 60 funding partners, spanning banks, 2nd tier lenders, commercial mortgage providers and bridging loan funders. Ranging from £25,000 to £150,000,000 we help business owners, property developers and wealthy individuals resolve their loan and capital challenges. Riqueza Group helps lots of wealthy people and sports professionals to include luxury property funding and facilitation of their investment into EIS registered start up businesses
MPL: WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL BACKGROUND?
Carl: I was originally born in St Helens but grew up in Runcorn and went to school in Frodsham. I was referred to in my youth as a “Wooly back” though my Mum and that side of the family were from Old Swan in Liverpool. I have many, many memories of spending younger years at St John’s Market; witnessing a developing Albert Dock and, later in my teenage years, visiting Matthew Street to enjoy a beer or eight.
In my adult life, I have lived across the UK, working for construction product manufacturers and distributors in sales & marketing roles, including SIG Roofing, Youngman Ladders; Akzo Nobel Decorative Coatings and then latterly I ran and owned my own builders merchants.
Funding and business finance in particular became an interest through my early days as a business owner, mainly how not to do it to be honest! I went through a very tough time owning the business due to bad debt, when building contractors didn’t pay or couldn’t pay due to their closing down. This hands on experience really does help when I’m talking to business owner clients these days.
MPL: YOU HAVE AN OFFICE IN LIVERPOOL, DO YOU ALSO OPERATE ANYWHERE ELSE?
Carl: Yes, our Liverpool office is based at Yorkshire House on Chapel Street, and we have two other offices in Warrington and also share a couple of smaller offices in London to ensure that we can service our wealthy and business owner clients across London & the South East.
MPL: WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR SPARE TIME?
Carl: I am very much a family man. In truth most of our team are very family oriented people. Myself, Neil, Jon and Tom, as Directors, all have kids, so with a busy business life comes the want and need to spend quality time with our families. When I get family time, I love having date nights with my wife Rachel and I am a football coach for my son’s under-7’s team. My (near) 9-year old daughter loves her dancing and I take her to a local stage & dance school.
I also help out in a non-executive role with a charity called CSI Basics. They are a brilliant team made up of volunteer doctors, paramedics and NHS staff who save lives at emergency incidents across Cheshire & Shropshire. My job is to help them raise funding through our business and wealth clients. I also recently started to donate time to SHARE, a not-for-profit homeless charity based in Chester that does some really outstanding work providing help for those needing it.
