Food & drink…‘A Small Fish In A Big Pond’

Take a stroll past Liverpool Town Hall and onwards down the right hand side of Water Street towards the River Mersey and you will discover ‘A Small Fish In A Big Pond’. This friendliest of independent artisan coffee houses, which has a 5-star hygiene rating, was a recent winner of a prestigious ‘Travellers Choice’ award on TripAdvisor, placing it in the top 10% of restaurants in the world.

Cheryl Braham is the inspiration behind this lovely and friendly little coffee house, which nestles at the lower street level of the historic Oriel Chambers building. It is a venue that offers a wonderfully creative space for people to socialise or work whilst enjoying a tasty menu offering speciality teas, cakes, pastries, salads and wraps to enjoy in or to take out.

Cheryl, who previously worked in training and development, used to enjoy sitting in a variety of coffee shops across the country while writing training programmes and when the time came these experiences inspired her to open up her own coffee shop. She explains, “For some time I had wanted to set up an independent coffee house and as soon as I got to view this place, with its quirky features and its location at the heart of one of our city’s most historic and beautiful streets (Water Street was one of the original seven streets of Liverpool), I knew it was just right for me.

I was able to lay out the coffee house as I wanted and my idea was to create somewhere cosy and relaxing, where people could study, work, have meetings or just come in and enjoy some social time, and this was just the place in which to do so. My partner came up with the name of the business after he heard a footballer say the phrase after a match and I liked the idea, because we are a small independent in a big city.”

A Small Fish In A Big Pond opened its doors in the summer of 2018 and the delicious handmade cakes, sandwiches and turmeric lattes quickly helped to firmly establish itself with local business staff and the many tourists that visit our wonderful city as a great place to take a break and relax. The layout of the coffee house provides front and rear rooms, while its arched ceilings, original cast iron-doors and vintage furniture and rear room, complete with piano, all contribute to its charm and friendly atmosphere.

The news about the Travellers Choice award came completely out of the blue for a delighted Cheryl. “When I received the email about being given the award, which is based on the quality of the reviews a business receives, it was a wonderful surprise and gave us all a great boost following lockdown. I thank everyone who placed a review based on their experience with us and since we reopened it has been great to see many of our regulars again.
