My Planet Liverpool recently met up with Jade Gallagher, a very talented local acoustic guitarist, singer and songwriter, who has performed at over 1,000 weddings and events nationwide, including appearing on stage with the likes of the Bee Gees, Bryan Adams and the Pussycat Dolls.
HOW OLD WERE YOU WHEN YOU REALISED YOU HAD A GOOD SINGING VOICE?
I actually started playing guitar first. I was 7 years old when I began learning to play and although I would sing along to my playing I classed myself as a pretty rubbish singer for many years! I’ve honed my craft since then and have learned endless lessons by trial, errors (many) and throwing myself in at the deep end. In doing so I have built up over 15 solid years of performing experience, ranging from the very early days when I’d happily play to only the bar staff, right up to performing at 10,000 seater sold-out arena tours and pretty much everything in between.
I was a late bloomer in terms of confidence and discovering/honing my vocal ability and I was actually in my early 20’s when I was first asked to perform Cliff Richard’s song ‘Miss You Nights’ at a high profile charity event in London. This came with the added pressure of knowing that the man himself was sitting on the front row! Sir Cliff was super nice to me given that I had no experience and sounded like a nervous wreck but I can safely say that it was definitely the first step towards the career I later chose for myself and I guess I’ve never looked back.
SINCE THEN YOU HAVE PERFORMED ONSTAGE WITH MANY FAMOUS ARTISTS. WHO WOULD YOU CLASS AS YOUR FAVOURITES?
Yes, I have been fortunate to experience a vast array of performances with high profile artists. I class every gig and tour that I have ever been lucky enough to do as a valuable learning curve but some of the most special moments for me have included touring Europe as the opening act for Robin Gibb on The Bee-gees Greatest Hits tour, being the opening act for one of my idols, Bryan Adams, in Liverpool at the Summer Pops festival and being asked to step in as the opening act for The Pussycat Dolls at the Liverpool Echo Arena in front of 10,000 people, having been given just 30 minutes notice!
I have also done a nationwide 30-date theatre tour supporting Joan Armatrading and I have been the opening act for many other artists, including Van Morrison and Hanson. I have also given several performances on Radio 2’s ‘Friday Night Is Music Night’ with the BBC Concert Orchestra and was featured in American Playboy magazine with photos shot by legendary rock photographer Mick Rock, who is renowned for iconic shots of Queen, Blondie and David Bowie.
WHO ARE YOUR MUSICAL INFLENCES?
I am a lover of great lyrics, strong melodies, voices that make you ‘feel’ things and I take my inspiration from what I class as incredible songwriters of our generation, such as Julia Michaels, Ryan Tedder, Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift.
HAVE YOU EVER RECORDED ANY SINGLES OR ALBUMS?
Yes. I co-wrote a single ‘Falling Into You’ that was recorded and released in 2018 as a duet by Asian superstars Maya Salvador and Tor Saksit. I have also featured on several dance tracks, including Thomas Mengel’s ‘Angel Without Wings’, which was released via Sony/Lifted House and I am currently recording a self-penned EP that will be released on Spotify later this year.
DO YOU NOW JUST CONCENTRATE ON SINGING AT WEDDINGS AND OTHER SPECIAL OCCASIONS?
That is right. I do perform at restaurants and some private events but wedding singing is something I kind of fell into and I admit it took me a while to ‘surrender’ to the idea, as it has always had such a stigma attached to it. However, once I realised that you don’t need to be on an arena-sized stage in front of thousands of people to enjoy performing and to give people happiness…my mindset changed.
While I am probably not most people’s idea of a typical Wedding Singer - I am never going to belt out a Whitney classic at the top of my voice - I will perform at your wedding because I like to create ripples of emotion throughout a room and leave people feeling ‘something’. I want to give brides the perfect ‘entrance’ to the gateway to the rest of their lives. In fact, more often than not, I have to stop myself welling up when I see the bride come down the aisle…and if the groom starts crying, well that’s me finished!
Of course, there are times I miss performing on stage in front of thousands of people. They are experiences I treasure and where I learned my craft. I never wanted to be famous, I just wanted to be heard and I also love to write. I don’t get to do it nearly enough anymore, but I know its always there, like a trusty friend that I can call upon when needed!
I have an extensive pop repertoire and special song requests are more than welcome. I like to try and make people feel in three minutes what I want them to feel. I consider myself very lucky that so many continue to give me that opportunity on a daily basis and for that I’m grateful.
So, what started some six years ago with me saying to my dad, ”‘I’m only gonna do one wedding a month!” has somehow evolved into a constantly packed 2-year schedule and me having to turn away more brides than I could have ever imagined.
OUTSIDE OF YOUR PERFORMING AT WEDDINGS WHAT ARE YOUR INTERESTS?
I am married to Anthony, who also doubles as my roadie, and when I’m not performing at weddings or events and he is not at work, we are kept busy running around after our two young boys, Kobe and Rio, and our excitable puppy cockapoo! We both also try to work out a lot in our gym. Being a creative, my favourite escape is to write songs in my head when I am driving and I have a phone full of recorded voice memos that would make absolutely no sense to anyone else!
